FAQ
Most frequently asked questions
Who is CancerCom?
CancerCom is a student lead initiative that started in September 2020, exactly one year after Sara lost her mom to breast cancer. The team started with three university students who had their parents affected by cancer, and now it grew to include medical students, graduates, doctors, and high school students who want to make a difference in the cancer community.
What makes CancerCom different?
We focus to cover the gaps in the cancer community through youth and their network. We work closely with the rest of cancer organizations to make sure we don’t overlap. In other words, our agenda is seeing what patients and their family need and working on that with everything we’ve got.
How do you know that the cases you are fundraising for are legit?
We are aware that money is a big responsibility, so our team of medical students vet the case thoroughly. We request all the documents that are relevant, make sure of the diagnosis, the dates, and request an official statement from the doctor about the needed procedure and its cost. Many times we call pharmacies to check the cost of treatment or the hospital or physician to double-check the validity.
How do you choose the cases you are fundraising for?
When we first receive a case, we try to link the patient with established entities that can assist them. If no one was able to support, the team assesses the case’s urgency and the patient’s financial needs. We support patients who have ultimately no support.
How do you make sure that the money went to the right place?
CancerCom members are spread across Lebanon. So most of the time, a CancerCom member meets the patient in the hospital or pharmacy to make payment and receive a receipt. Otherwise, the money is transferred to the patient, and they are asked to send the payment receipt within 24hrs.
CancerCom offers services?
In addition to providing general awareness, linking patients with available entities, and fundraising for those who need it, we are offering services in collaboration with accredited institutions.
We provide free online nutritional consultations (one-on-one) with LAU Nutrition program and free support groups (facilitated by a psycho-oncoligist) with Siira, a mental health platform.
